The smoky days of mid-November were unlike anything �� had experienced. Lecture halls went silent and bike traffic slowed to a trickle as hazardous pollutants from the horrific Camp Fire in Butte County engulfed the region. The scene of masked faces and orange skies was surreal as we closed our Davis and Sacramento campuses for more than a week.

Dogs, Cats Rescued From California Camp Fire Heal With Fish Skins

�� veterinarian Jamie Peyton is treating burned dogs and cats from the Camp Fire with tilapia skins. This is the first time fish skins have been used to treat burns on dogs and cats.

�� students took first place in the 2018 Alexa Prize Finals, beating out teams from universities in Scotland and the Czech Republic in the Amazon-sponsored competition to turn voice assistant Alexa into a better conversationalist, the ecommerce company announced today (Nov. 27).

Amazon presented a $500,000 prize to be divided equally among the 11 undergraduate and graduate students who comprised the Gunrock team.

Cats and Owners Reuniting at ��

The School of Veterinary Medicine is reuniting some pets brought to campus after the Camp Fire with their owners.

Laci Ping and her husband, Curtis Mullins, adopted Mayson just two weeks ago. The tabby slipped through a carrier when an explosion startled him during the Camp Fire evacuation.

Camp Fire: Donation Drive Wraps, Veterinary Response Continues

The campus continues its efforts to assist victims of the Camp Fire in Butte County, with firefighters on the front lines, thousands of pounds of donations delivered to the fire’s victims, and veterinary personnel treating and seeking the owners of injured or displaced animals.

Camp Fire: Campus Lends Multiple Hands

A �� fire crew and a veterinary team spent the long weekend hard at work at the Camp Fire, while back on campus, other firefighters ran a relief effort for the fire victims, and veterinary staff tended to animals brought in from the fire zone.

The School of Veterinary Medicine reported taking in cats, pigs, goats, a donkey and koi — the second time in just over a year the campus has taken in koi from fire zones.
